Blood Tests

Blood tests are a commonly used diagnostic tool performed by healthcare professionals. A small amount of blood is drawn from a patient’s vein, usually in the arm, and sent to a lab for analysis. Urine Tests

Urine tests, also known as urinalysis, involve analyzing a urine sample. The sample is collected in a specialized cup and sent to a lab for examination. Urinalysis can detect various conditions such as kidney disease, urinary tract infections, and liver disease.

X-rays

X-rays are imaging tests that utilize low levels of radiation to visualize internal structures, particularly bones. They can diagnose fractures, infections, blockages, and diseases like pneumonia or cancer. X-rays can be performed on any body part but are not recommended for pregnant women.

Electrocardiograms (EKGs)

Ultrasounds

Physical Exams

Physical exams, also known as routine check-ups, involve a healthcare provider examining a patient’s body for signs of disease. They include observing, palpating, percussing, and auscultating different body parts. Physical exams vary based on factors such as age, gender, and medical history. They are essential for preventive healthcare and can help detect potential issues.

Strep Throat Tests

Strep throat tests are performed when a healthcare provider suspects a patient has strep throat. The rapid antigen test and throat culture are common tests. They involve collecting a sample from the back of the throat and tonsils using a sterile swab. Positive results require antibiotic treatment.

Lyme Disease Tests

Lyme disease tests determine if an individual has been infected with the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. Enzyme immunoassay (EIA) and Western blot tests are commonly used. These tests measure the body’s immune response to the bacteria and can yield false negatives in the early stages of infection.

Mononucleosis Tests

Mononucleosis tests help diagnose infectious mononucleosis, typically caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). The Monospot test is the most common, detecting EBV antibodies in the blood. If negative but symptoms persist, other EBV antibody tests may be used.

HIV Tests

HIV tests detect the presence of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). They can detect antibodies, the virus itself, or both. Various types of tests are available, including rapid tests and home testing kits. Regular testing is crucial for those at risk to ensure early detection and prompt treatment.
